California gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer has expressed support for transgender athletes participating in high school sports. Steyer emphasized that excluding transgender youth from sports could exacerbate existing emotional and mental health challenges.
In a discussion on the ‘I’ve Had It’ podcast, Steyer shared, “I’m totally in favor of trans athletes in high school.” He highlighted the vulnerability and challenges faced by transgender youth, noting that nearly half attempt suicide. He questioned the fairness of preventing these children from participating in team sports and the impact such exclusion could have.
During a conversation with CBS Los Angeles, Steyer described the controversy as a “right-wing attempt” to defame marginalized transgender individuals. He stressed that this is not a widespread issue and voiced concern for the well-being of transgender youth, many of whom feel rejected and unaccepted.
Steyer remarked, “This is a right-wing attempt to victimize and villainize already vulnerable and desperate people.”
Steyer is part of a competitive field of Democrats aiming to maintain party control of the governorship when Governor Gavin Newsom’s term ends. The list of Democratic candidates includes Antonio Villaraigosa, Katie Porter, Xavier Becerra, among others. Republican challengers include Steve Hilton and Chad Bianco.
Other candidates have echoed Steyer’s support, emphasizing the role of youth sports in building character and teamwork. Katie Porter noted the importance of sports beyond mere competition. Xavier Becerra urged adherence to state laws that allow participation based on gender identity, emphasizing the protection of certain groups.
Former U.S. Rep. Katie Porter commented, “Youth sports are about building character and teamwork, not simply deciding who is best.”
San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan criticized the politicization of the issue, acknowledging potential fairness concerns in specific situations. However, he warned against using the issue to divide people.
Antonio Villaraigosa termed the debate a “non-issue” but expressed opposition to discrimination. He stated a personal view against biological males who have undergone puberty competing in women’s sports.
Betty Yee pointed to the necessity of identifying ways to ensure fairness while including all individuals, while Tony Thurmond expressed definitive support for transgender athletes.
On the other hand, Republican candidates Hilton and Bianco advocate for reversing current legislation that supports transgender participation in sports.
