Chicago Cubs Struggle to Find Success Amid Season Slump

4 weeks ago 0

The Chicago Cubs face mounting challenges as they strive to regain form after a series of disappointing performances. Despite the losses, those in the Cubs’ clubhouse are determined to maintain a positive outlook. They believe a turnaround is imminent and remain confident in their abilities.

The Cubs experienced a dramatic shift following a promising 10-game winning streak that ended on May 9. They continue to emphasize process over results as they navigate through fluky performances. Recent struggles are not seen as a determinant for the season, echoed by the veteran players.

Monday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates culminated in a 2-1 loss, marking their ninth consecutive defeat and the 13th in 15 games. The Cubs’ offense faltered, overshadowing right-hander Ben Brown’s impressive start. Brown allowed only one run and four hits over six innings. Manager Craig Counsell tried to spark the lineup by making adjustments.

Pete Crow-Armstrong demonstrated promise with a hit and three walks, batting as a leadoff for three days. His efforts, marked by impressive exit velocities, resulted in outs, despite strong projected average percentages.

“We’ve got to play better,” Counsell said. “We need more guys contributing, and as a coaching staff, we’ve got to get the players there. Offensively we are equipped to be more consistent and better, and we need to show it.”

Counsell’s approach has included providing players like Ian Happ with a mental reset, alongside lineup changes. Players such as Nico Hoerner and Seiya Suzuki were given days off but later involved as pinch hitters against Pirates closer Gregory Soto, resulting in grounded outs and strikeouts.

Pedro Ramírez and Michael Conforto have seen increased playtime. The various lineup changes haven’t yielded significant results, with the Cubs batting .178 over a challenging 15-game stretch, lowest in the league.

The Cubs faced a promising opportunity during Monday’s game in the second inning. After loading bases with two outs, Pirates pitcher Carmen Mlodzinski struck out Dansby Swanson, ending the inning without scoring.

Swanson reflects on the pressure facing the team: “Everyone wants to do well, win badly, which sometimes backfires in baseball. It’s about taking a step back, gaining perspective, and trying again tomorrow.”

Amid the struggles, Michael Busch proved a bright spot with a 138 wRC+ over recent games. Busch tied the game Monday with a home run, adding, “Simplify for us as individuals; quality at-bats are important.”

Ben Brown exhibits consistency within the rotation since joining, boasting a 1.89 ERA in 19 innings. Brown’s control and variety with pitches kept Pirates’ players guessing, delivering 31 called strikes and whiffs.

Looking forward, the Cubs turn to Jordan Wicks for Tuesday’s game, hoping to avoid their first 10-game losing streak since 2022. Brown commented, “We’re just not winning games right now and the reality of baseball can be tough. We’ve got to play freely, not pressured.”
