President Donald Trump stated on Monday that any deal with Iran should include the involvement of additional nations, like Saudi Arabia and Turkey, in the Abraham Accords. These agreements, initiated by the U.S. under Trump’s administration, aim to normalize relations with Israel. Trump highlighted on social media that negotiations are progressing well, linking any potential accord with Iran to an expansion of these agreements, which were originally signed in 2020.
Trump identified countries such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar as ones that should join the accords immediately. He also mentioned Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, and Jordan as subsequent participants. Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates set the precedent by joining in 2020. According to Trump, after extensive efforts by the U.S. to coordinate these complex agreements, it is essential for all these nations, at least, to sign the Abraham Accords simultaneously. During negotiations on Saturday, he discussed the accords with various leaders. Trump indicated willingness to permit ‘one or two’ nations to opt out, though he expected most to agree.
Egypt and Jordan have long-standing peace treaties with Israel, acknowledging its sovereignty. However, the timeline and implications of incorporating these countries into the accords, especially regarding an agreement with Iran, remain unclear. Trump also proposed that even Iran could join the accords if an agreement materializes.
The Abraham Accords encompass a set of diplomatic, economic, and security agreements created with U.S. support during Trump’s first term. Initially, they involved agreements between Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain, with subsequent inclusion of Sudan, Morocco, and Kazakhstan. The accords aim to enhance cooperation among countries in the Middle East and North Africa and were seen by the administration as a pathway toward establishing full ties with Israel.
