1 hour ago 0

Two powerful earthquakes hit Venezuela, causing widespread destruction and loss of life. President Donald Trump commented on the “devastating number of deaths” following these back-to-back quakes. Venezuela’s interim President, Delcy Rodríguez, later confirmed at least 32 fatalities and more than 700 injuries.

The earthquakes caused significant damage, including in Caracas, where rescue efforts focused on clearing rubble. In a Truth Social post, Trump described the quakes as “massive” and noted extensive devastation.

“The two major earthquakes that just hit the great people of Venezuela are both massive in scale and have left a devastating number of deaths,” Trump stated.

Trump expressed readiness for the United States to assist in response efforts, instructing government agencies to prepare to act swiftly.

“The U.S.A. stands ready, willing, and able to help! We will be there for our new and great friends.”

Early reports from Venezuela indicated significant casualties and damage. The U.S. Geological Survey reported an initial 7.2 magnitude quake at the epicenter near San Felipe, followed 39 seconds later by a 7.5 magnitude quake near Yumare.

The USGS issued a rare red alert, signaling high casualties and extensive damage.

Following the earthquakes, Rodríguez declared a state of emergency. He delivered a televised address, urging calm and unity among Venezuelans.

“We urge our population to remain calm. We urge unity,” Rodríguez said.

By Thursday, Rodríguez confirmed 32 deaths and more than 700 injuries.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau announced American officials were coordinating with Venezuelan authorities to deliver aid.

“The U.S. stands with the Venezuelan people in the aftermath of this evening’s devastating earthquakes,” Landau stated.

The State Department’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs monitored the situation, offering condolences and support during the challenging time.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the victims and are committed to supporting the people of Venezuela,” the bureau’s statement read.

The bureau advised U.S. citizens in Venezuela to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for updates.
