Rourke’s Triumphant Return Lifts Lincoln-Way West to Victory

Friday marked a milestone for Lincoln-Way West’s Reese Rourke in her softball career. Returning after missing most of the season, she hit two home runs, propelling her team to a historic win. The senior shortstop’s performance was a realization of both a fairytale and a dream.

“After the first home run, I cried,” Rourke admitted. “The happiness was overwhelming. After the second, I felt pure joy.” The 2-1 victory over Lockport in the Class 4A Lincoln-Way West Sectional championship game was monumental for the Warriors. Rourke, an NC State recruit, excelled with a 3-for-3 performance, including two home runs and a double. Teammate Paige Seivert contributed with two hits, while Abby Brueggmann claimed the pitching win.

Lincoln-Way West broke new ground by securing their first sectional title, positioning them to face Edwardsville at 6:30 p.m. on Monday in the Illinois Wesleyan Supersectional. Rourke was emotional after her initial home run in the first inning. “Oh, my goodness, we were just exploding in the dugout,” Brueggmann recalled, noting how special it was for Rourke.

“Reese is the hardest worker I’ve met,” Brueggmann said. “She’s my best friend, and this was amazing for her.” Rourke’s comeback is noteworthy. She began the season holding several team records. However, adversity struck when she suffered a wrist fracture that required surgery.

Rourke returned cautiously, only batting a few times until she rejoined full play in a sectional semifinal against Lincoln-Way Central, going 1-for-4 with a double. Unsatisfied, Rourke sought self-improvement by watching videos of her previous games, visualizing her success.

In the championship, her efforts paid off. Rourke’s additional double in the third inning and second home run in the sixth cemented the lead. Brueggmann effectively closed the game, striking out three and stranding nine opponents.

The backstory adds irony; Rourke was a leading pitcher as a freshman but transitioned to shortstop, facilitated by Brueggmann’s pitching. “I need her there,” Rourke said with a smile. “Abby carries us on the mound.”

Coach Heather Novak also reflected on Rourke’s journey. “Her injury early in the season was heartbreaking,” Novak shared. “Despite everything, she remained dedicated and supportive. Witnessing her rise to be the impact player she is, makes me so happy for her.”
