Andrew S. Boutros, appointed by the Trump administration as the U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, oversees a significant criminal investigation involving E. Jean Carroll. Carroll is a former magazine writer who accused Donald J. Trump of sexual assault.
Mr. Boutros assumed his role just over a year ago. His background includes experience as a federal prosecutor in the same district, tackling drug trafficking, white-collar crimes, and money laundering cases, supplemented by his time in private practice.
Since his appointment in Chicago, Boutros has focused on prosecuting financial fraud, firearm possession, robbery, and violent threats. Recently, he shifted resources towards more politically sensitive cases, aligning closely with Mr. Trump’s agenda.
This alignment has sparked criticism. Christopher V. Parente, a former deputy chief in the Chicago office, expressed concerns. He represented a defendant in a case against protesters of Trump’s immigration policies and questioned Mr. Boutros’ influences.
Judge April M. Perry reprimanded Boutros’ office last week for improper actions before a grand jury. She stressed the paramount importance of justice, noting, “Your sole goal is to do justice.” She emphasized that trust in government attorneys must be maintained, but felt it had been breached in this instance.
