A sweeping manhunt is happening in Virginia for an “armed and extremely dangerous” suspect. This individual allegedly targeted two deputies during a welfare check on Friday night, resulting in the death of a military veteran and injury to another officer.
Details of the Incident
Deputy Logan Utt, 31, was killed in the assault according to Carroll County Sheriff Kevin Kemp. The suspect, Michael Puckett, is accused of opening fire on the deputies, killing one. A $10,000 reward is being offered by the U.S. Marshals Service for information leading to Puckett’s capture.
The incident occurred shortly before 9:30 p.m. local time. The two Carroll County deputies went to a residence after a relative requested a welfare check. Upon meeting Puckett, he allegedly began shooting, killing Utt and injuring the second deputy. The injured officer’s life was saved by a ballistic vest. Although the deputies returned fire, Puckett managed to escape and is still at large.
Virginia State Police are actively searching for Puckett. Authorities urge the public not to approach Puckett but to call 911 immediately if he is seen.
Legacy of Deputy Utt
Deputy Utt joined the sheriff’s office in 2023, following a career as a military veteran. Sheriff Kemp noted Utt’s aspiration to serve as a deputy sheriff and his commitment to making Carroll County safer.
“Becoming a deputy sheriff was a lifelong dream, and he worked every day to make Carroll County a safer place,” Kemp stated. “Carroll County has lost a hero, and a family has suffered an unimaginable loss.”
Utt is survived by his wife and children. His fellow officer, who was injured, is in stable condition.
Ongoing Investigation
Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger confirmed her office’s close monitoring of the situation, urging any individuals with information on Puckett’s whereabouts to step forward.
“Deputy Logan Utt’s sacrifice is a testament to his bravery and dedication to his community,” Governor Spanberger wrote. “Adam and I are praying for Deputy Utt’s family, the injured officer during his recovery, and for the safety of all our courageous men and women in law enforcement.”
Virginia State Police are spearheading the investigation.
