Transgender athlete AB Hernandez concluded a notable high school sports career at the California track and field state championship, securing two titles and sharing podium spots with female competitors. Hernandez achieved first place in the girls’ high jump and triple jump, and third place in the long jump. Last year, Hernandez won the triple jump and high jump state championships, finishing second in the long jump.
The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) implemented a pilot program at the championships, awarding podium recognition to girls who finished behind Hernandez. This sparked controversy among women’s sports activists, leading to a heated debate. Hernandez’s high school career has been a point of political discussion over trans athletes in women’s sports since the 2024-2025 school year.
During championship weekend, Hernandez appeared in a video with Democrat California gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer. Republican candidate Steve Hilton led a rally advocating for girls’ sports protection. LGBTQ advocacy groups Pride at the Pier and Rainbow Families Action organized a press conference outside the event, where verbal confrontations occurred between supporters and opponents of transgender athletes.
Clovis Police Department oversaw the scene but did not intervene directly. Hernandez continued to compete in multiple events simultaneously, demonstrating noteworthy athletic effort. After the championship, California faces ongoing debate over the participation of biological males in girls’ sports.
The U.S. Department of Justice is suing education agencies in the state for policies allowing trans athletes to compete against females. Hernandez’s school district is under investigation by the Department of Education. The topic of transgender athletes is expected to influence upcoming political campaigns in California.
