Curfew Imposed Around Newark Detention Center Amid Protests

3 weeks ago 0

The mayor of Newark, Ras Baraka, has put a curfew in place around Delaney Hall, an immigration detention center in New Jersey. This curfew, effective from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., follows a series of intense clashes between protesters and police. The curfew will continue until further notice.

Recent demonstrations have included confrontations between law enforcement and protesters. Photos and videos show clashes over barricades, with police officers using riot shields to maintain order. A social media video depicted police on horseback attempting to disperse protesters.

These high-profile protests started earlier this month, following claims by advocates that detainees at the 1,000-bed facility initiated a hunger strike due to poor conditions. Tensions peaked with New Jersey state police taking over duties from federal immigration enforcement agents late last week.

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill issued a statement, describing masked individuals attacking barriers set up by the state police. She noted that projectiles were thrown, barriers used as weapons, and tires set alight in the streets, endangering both peaceful protestors and law enforcement. Sherrill called for calm, highlighting the need to focus on improving detainee conditions and closing Delaney Hall.

Governor Sherrill also mentioned the reopening of family visitations at Delaney Hall. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security clarified this decision, stating that visitation was initially suspended due to violent riots but resumed once a secure perimeter was established.
