Human remains found by a hiker in Carson National Forest, New Mexico, have been identified as Melissa Casias, a missing employee of Los Alamos National Laboratory. The New Mexico Medical Investigator’s Office confirmed the identification. Casias had been missing for nearly a year.
The discovery occurred in the McGaffey Ridge area and was reported on Thursday. Alongside the remains, a handgun was found, according to a statement by New Mexico State Police on Saturday. The Medical Investigator’s Office is responsible for determining the cause and manner of Casias’s death.
Representatives for Casias’s family have decided not to comment until after an upcoming meeting with investigators. Similarly, Los Alamos National Laboratory has yet to respond to requests for comment.
The discovery site is approximately six miles from Casias’s home and is accessible via a state highway. Casias was reportedly seen walking along this highway on the day she was reported missing. She was last seen on June 26, when her employer called her husband, Mark Casias, due to her absence at work.
Mark Casias recounted that his wife had dropped him off at the laboratory, where they both worked, and said she had a task to complete within the facility. However, she did not return as planned. Their daughter, Sierra, found Melissa’s personal items, including keys and a cellphone reset to factory settings, at their home in Ranchos de Taos. Additionally, Melissa was spotted walking east on State Road 518 by an acquaintance that afternoon.
Mark revealed that Melissa was under significant stress, though he withheld specific details. Police have not ruled out the possibility of foul play, acknowledging it is possible she got into a vehicle that day. However, State Police Sgt. Ricardo Breceda suggested last year that Melissa might have disappeared voluntarily.
State Police extended their deepest condolences to the Casias family and affirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
