Air Traffic Controller Averts Potential Mishap

An experienced air traffic controller identified a potentially dangerous situation when two planes, both American Airlines flight 2482, were in operation at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. One plane was attempting to land from Chicago, while the other was preparing to depart. This mix-up occurred early on a Friday morning.

The controller swiftly categorized the flights as ‘American 2482 departure’ and ‘American 2482 arrival’ to prevent any confusion and ensure safety. Thanks to his prompt action, both flights executed their respective tasks without any problems.

The controller reflected on the situation, stating, ‘I’ve been working air traffic for 25 years—I’ve never seen two aircraft emerge with the same call sign. I’m glad it all worked out there. It could have been disastrous.’

The Federal Aviation Administration has initiated an investigation into the incident. According to the agency, they are keen on understanding how this overlap happened.

An American Airlines spokeswoman explained that the arriving flight from Chicago experienced a delay. To maintain scheduling, a different aircraft at the airport was assigned the same call sign for a flight back to Chicago after the delayed plane landed.
