President Donald Trump announced another arrest related to vandalism at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. In a Truth Social post, Trump stated that a total of six individuals were arrested and seven were cited. These actions were taken due to damage at the Reflecting Pool, which the president described as a blemish on an otherwise beautiful landmark.
Trump has claimed vandalism occurred but has yet to provide evidence. Observations of the pool show deterioration; blue sealant is peeling and floating, while algae growth has turned the water green. During a Tuesday meeting with reporters, Trump suggested the Interior Department might share images of this damage.
Previously, Trump alleged vandals sliced a massive gash into the pool. He claimed in one post that the damage comprised multiple slashes over a length of 350 feet, supposedly done with sharp instruments at night. Trump also noted damage to a small area at the bottom, explaining that the pool surface was cut and lifted, creating jagged edges.
Additionally, Trump claimed chemicals were unlawfully placed in the water. He described potential penalties, stating vandalism or even an attempt to vandalize the pool could lead to a 10-year prison sentence. Neither U.S. Park Police, the National Park Service, nor the Interior Department has commented.
“It’s not your typical case,”
One person ensnared in these allegations was U.S. Olympic canoeist David “Davey” Hearn. Hearn said he was arrested after investigating the pool situation out of curiosity. He touched a piece of the detached coating but insisted he did no harm. He described the coating as stiff yet pliable. Despite being detained and arrested by the National Guard, Hearn was uninformed about the specific law he might have violated.
Former federal prosecutor Neama Rahmani commented on the situation, indicating that federal cases often involve felonies rather than misdemeanors. Given the political environment, he predicted these cases might be treated differently, stressing the unusual nature and potential presidential influence.
Rahmani explained that federal misdemeanor accusations typically result in citations and court appearances. Punishments may include jail time up to a year or probation and fines. The president’s 10-year sentence threat likely pertains to the arrested individuals.
To restore the pool, Trump stated some water drainage might occur around the Fourth of July, during the country’s 250-year independence celebration. Trump also mentioned grass replacement around the pool.
The Reflecting Pool has attracted Trump’s attention, being considered neglected by prior presidents before current renovations commenced. Algae issues have persisted at the site. The $14-million plus project includes a new liner and a fresh coating dubbed “American flag blue” by Trump.
