Amanda Seyfried has shared her decision to turn down a television series due to its requirement for frequent sex scenes, mentioning her discomfort with performing intimate scenes as she grows older. During her conversation with Alec Baldwin at the Hamptons International Film Festival in East Hampton, New York, Seyfried explained that she rejected the project because she’s not comfortable with the idea of being “naked with a stranger.”
Her decision is not isolated, as other actresses like Gina Gershon have voiced similar concerns. Gershon declined a role in the 1981 horror film “Friday the 13th Part 2” after discovering that her character would appear topless, finding the nudity exploitative.
Seyfried, now 40, reflects on her earlier years in Hollywood, where she felt pressured to engage in uncomfortable scenes due to fears of upsetting others and losing job opportunities. She recounted filming scenes without underwear at 19, driven by the desire to retain her career.
Her perspective has evolved, particularly after becoming a mother. Seyfried has become more assertive in setting personal and professional boundaries, recognizing the importance of maintaining control over her work environment.
Other actresses have also shared their experiences. Christina Ricci noted being threatened with legal action for refusing to perform a sex scene in a specific way. Keira Knightley introduced a no-nudity clause in her contracts, granting her more control over intimate scenes.
While the approaches vary among actresses, Hollywood has taken steps to safeguard performers during intimate scenes. Intimacy coordinators have emerged, providing safety and a framework for scenes involving simulated sex or nudity. Jessica Steinrock, an intimacy coordinator, emphasized the role’s importance in establishing consent and expectations.
SAG-AFTRA guidelines mandate advance notice and written nudity riders for anticipated nudity or simulated sex acts, with protections negotiated for intimacy coordinators scheduled for implementation in 2025.
Seyfried, who shares two children with actor Thomas Sadoski, notes motherhood has reinforced her resolve to assert personal boundaries more strongly. “I have kids now who are paying attention to what I do, and so I have to be less of a pushover,” she remarked.
