Americans’ Views on Inflation and Political Policies

For some time, large numbers of Americans have expressed concerns that their incomes are lagging behind inflation. Many feel that President Trump is not addressing this issue adequately. However, people also do not foresee any major solutions coming from either political party.

The public tends to be more critical of Republicans, with a majority stating that GOP policies are more harmful than helpful. This sentiment is influenced by the president’s low ratings on inflation policies, which are perceived to negatively impact people’s finances.

Democrats fare slightly better, yet only a third believe their policies help with the cost of living. This number is still somewhat net-negative in comparison to those who feel harmed by their policies. When it comes to overall economic policy, both parties are on even footing.

Regarding immigration, President Trump and the Republicans hold a slight advantage over Democrats. Despite this, there are challenges, such as declining approval for the administration’s deportation program. GOP supporters tend to rate Trump’s handling of immigration more favorably than his approach to inflation.

Democrats face perception issues for not prioritizing longer-term citizens over recent immigrants. Yet, perceptions about U.S. election and voting procedures have remained steady since Trump’s recent address on elections.

There is bipartisan support for requiring photo ID to vote, and most Americans view voting as a state matter. They prefer state control over elections rather than federal oversight, especially from the Trump administration.

Looking towards the future, more voters currently lean towards favoring Democratic control of Congress. This is a common pattern for the party not holding the White House during midterms. As the fall approaches, the impact of this preference on voting outcomes will become clearer.

This analysis is based on a CBS News/YouGov survey conducted with 2,193 U.S. adults from July 22-24, 2026. The sample was designed to represent the national population, considering demographics and past voting behavior. The margin of error for this poll is ±2.7 points.
