Amy Poehler Reflects on Waiting Tables and Meeting Oprah Winfrey

53 minutes ago 0

Amy Poehler is widely known today for her comedic talents, particularly from her stint on Saturday Night Live and her role as Leslie Knope on Parks and Recreation. However, before rising to fame, she honed her skills while working in restaurants.

During an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Poehler, now 55, reminisced about her early days in Chicago post-college when she worked as a server. It was during these times that she encountered several celebrities, including Oprah Winfrey. Poehler recalls, “I waited on Oprah Winfrey. I bet she doesn’t remember it. But I do.”

Poehler noted that her job as a waitress helped bolster her improvisational skills, a crucial part of her later success. “Yeah, when you’re a waitress, you learn a lot about improvising,” she said. “You can pretend you know what you’re talking about when they ask you, you know, what’s in a sauce?”

She also learned practical skills, such as carrying four plates on one arm, and appreciated how serving customers required quick thinking and confidence, traits that mirrored those of improv.

While her time as a waitress is long past, the memory of serving Oprah remains vivid. Poehler humorously mentioned the possibility of bringing up the encounter if they were to dine together again. “I should bring it up to her,” she quipped. “When I get home and we have dinner, I’ll let her know.”

Poehler’s reflection highlights how early experiences, however seemingly unrelated, can play a role in personal and professional growth.
