Julia Garner has gained recognition for her performances that involve significant transformations. In the Netflix series The Altruists, she portrays Caroline Ellison, partner and girlfriend to Sam Bankman-Fried, involved in a large multi-billion dollar fraud that led to the downfall of FTX, a cryptocurrency exchange.

Garner’s approach to embodying Ellison involves adopting various mannerisms. When asked about her method, she shared, “I notice everything. You can discern a lot with someone’s eyes. I study photos obsessively, focusing mainly on their eyes, aiming to capture that essence in the characters I portray.” She attributes her choices to her attraction to complex characters, remarking that she feels they choose her too.

Born and raised in Riverdale, Bronx, Garner had an upbringing enriched by art lessons at the Wave Hill Cultural Center. Her father is an art teacher, while her mother transitioned from acting to therapy, possibly influencing Garner’s career path. Despite being extremely shy in her early years, Garner took her first acting class at 14. She reflects on her childhood saying, “I was acting my whole life due to various learning problems and feeling like an outsider. Acting offered me a sanctuary.”

Her career began with a role in the 2011 film Martha Marcy May Marlene, but her breakthrough came with the crime series Ozark in 2017. As Ruth Langmore, her performance won her a Golden Globe and three Emmy Awards, transforming her career. Garner expressed that playing Ruth taught her not to fear, leading to roles of intense characters. She also earned a Golden Globe nomination in 2022 for portraying Anna Sorokin in Inventing Anna.

The attention she received overwhelmed her, but during the actors’ strike of 2023, Garner attended clown school in France. Despite initial failures, the experience was enlightening. Her clown instructor encouraged her to confront her feelings of inadequacy and shame, asking her to show openness. Through this, she learned the value of vulnerability in her craft.

Garner’s engagement with authenticity continued as she auditioned for a biopic about Madonna, though it remains in development. The audition process required her to master singing, dancing, and acting, pushing her capabilities. This experience emphasized the importance of impacting audiences, as she aspires to evoke connection and reduce loneliness through her performances.
