Kate DiCamillo, beloved for her children’s literature, presents her 12th novel, The True Story of Edith Leapyear, Child Outlaw: As Told by Herself. This new middle grade book from Norton Waverly is set for release on April 6, 2027, and PEOPLE exclusively unveils its cover.
The story follows Edith Leapyear, an orphan known for her mischievous nature, who resides at Elma Larkspur’s Home for Unwanted Girls. Her antics lead her to jail, where she begins to chronicle her journey in her own words. Described as “laugh-out-loud funny, gut-wrenching, and deeply compassionate,” the book marks a triumphant return for DiCamillo, renowned for her works like Because of Winn-Dixie and The Tale of Despereaux.
DiCamillo shared with PEOPLE, “Edith taught me how to be brave. Writing her story was profoundly moving, and I hope readers find their voice through her words.”
Norton Waverly’s publisher Karen Lotz emphasized the book’s relevance, stating, “It’s a story for our time, offering hope and humor to children feeling lost amidst societal changes.” She highlights Edith as a beacon of hope, compassion, and humor.
