Angler Wins Tournament Using Unconventional Strategy

Kaden Buchmann recently claimed victory in the first Bassmaster Elite Qualifier of the season at Norfork Lake in Arkansas. Over the three-day competition, he secured a total catch of 42 pounds, 7 ounces, demonstrating a unique approach to finding bass without modern technology.

Deer as Unlikely Allies

This particular tournament did not permit the use of forward-facing sonar, forcing anglers like Buchmann to seek alternative methods. In a creative twist, he turned his attention to the local wildlife, specifically deer, to locate unpressured fishing spots.

With more than 130 anglers on the small reservoir, finding untouched areas was challenging. Observing deer grazing near the water suggested these spots had minimal fishing disturbances. Buchmann noted, “If I saw 15 deer in a pocket, I’d say, ‘I’m getting bit here.'” This unconventional strategy proved effective, allowing him to lead the tournament’s first day with 16 pounds, 7 ounces.

Continuing the Approach

On the second day, Buchmann continued utilizing deer as indicators, resulting in the capture of two quality bass. He shared with Bassmaster, “We can’t use [forward-facing sonar] this week, so you just have to fish where you think they’re gonna be.” Although simple in theory, Buchmann’s execution was anything but easy.

Aside from deer-watching, Buchmann credited his success to his aggressive pace, mental resilience, and strategic avoidance of crowded areas. He covered vast portions of Norfork Lake, employing methods like topwater baits and skipping jigs to target different structures. His determination eventually saw him secure victories from areas he had never previously explored.

A Hard-Earned Achievement

After opening with 16-7, Buchmann added another 14 pounds on the second day, and concluded the final round with 12 more pounds. He ultimately triumphed by a margin of 1 pound, 14 ounces over the runner-up, Cody Stahl. Along with $71,317 in winnings, Buchmann earned a coveted invitation to the 2027 Bassmaster Classic at Lake Hartwell.

Despite two qualifiers remaining, Buchmann’s creative technique is now public knowledge. It’s possible future competitors might adopt this unorthodox method to gain a competitive edge in their pursuit of fishing victory.
