President Donald Trump is set to host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Tuesday. This meeting arrives during a politically sensitive period for Netanyahu. Their discussions will include the conflict with Iran, peace efforts in Lebanon, and the expansion of the Abraham Accords.
Trump will also hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the situation in Ukraine. Netanyahu has faced reduced backing for the Iran conflict he once championed, both domestically and in the U.S. Despite previous strong support, his ties with Trump appear strained.
Recently, Netanyahu criticized Trump’s decision to sell F-35 jets to Turkey. Trump dismissed any influence on his sale decisions, acknowledging a slight difference of opinion on Iran but mostly agreement. Netanyahu mentioned his intention to discuss the unresolved state of the Iran war with Trump. This follows recent military actions by both the U.S. and Iran in the region.

The meeting occurs amidst scrutiny over the handling of the war since Operation Epic Fury began in February. The U.S. has lost four soldiers recently, bringing the total to 18. Concerns grow over dwindling U.S. weapons stockpiles, leading the Defense Department to request $67 billion in supplemental funding.
U.S. ambassador Mike Waltz mentioned that Trump is allowing space for talks with Iran while keeping all military options available. In an interview, Netanyahu emphasized the close cooperation between U.S. and Israeli intelligence, stating that any attack from Iran on Israel would be met with a robust response.
In the broader context of Middle East diplomacy, Trump indicated that Saudi Arabia must normalize relations with Israel through the Abraham Accords to secure a nuclear deal. Netanyahu agreed with Trump’s condition and will attend a memorial for Sen. Lindsey Graham, a strong ally of Israel.
Meanwhile, Mayor Zohran Mamdani of New York City highlighted legal limitations on arresting Netanyahu during his possible visit for the U.N. General Assembly in September. Trump assured that such an arrest would not happen in the U.S. Netanyahu confirmed plans to attend the assembly.
