On Tuesday, Apple launched the iPhone 17 series, featuring four new models, including the introduction of the iPhone Air, the company’s thinnest smartphone to date. As expected, these new phones come with upgraded cameras, longer-lasting batteries, and several enhancements. The models include a new A19 chip designed to enhance Apple’s artificial intelligence capabilities.
Pricing and Tariffs
The release of the iPhone 17 lineup marks Apple’s first phone series under President Donald Trump’s administration, amidst newly imposed tariffs affecting both businesses and consumers. Contrary to speculation about price hikes, Apple has largely maintained its pricing, similar to Google’s approach with its new Pixel phones. The iPhone 17 is priced starting at around $800, while the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max cost $1,100 and $1,200, respectively. The iPhone Air is priced at $1,000. The Pro model is $100 more expensive than last year, but prices generally remain within the $800 to $1,200 range established since 2020.
These releases occur as companies encounter rising operational costs due to Trump’s tariffs demanding that iPhones be manufactured domestically. Analysts point out that relocating production to the U.S. is currently unrealistic and could significantly increase iPhone prices.
Enhanced Camera and Battery Life
The iPhone 17 series showcases improvements in camera technology. The front camera now offers a wider field of view and a new sensor, enabling landscape selfies. The iPhone Air additionally allows simultaneous video recording with both front and back cameras. The Pro and Pro Max models include a stronger telephoto lens and other enhancements. Furthermore, Apple has extended battery life across the lineup, claiming that the iPhone Air is their most power-efficient device.
Artificial Intelligence Features
Though the iPhone 17 series does not introduce as many AI innovations as previous models, it comes equipped with iOS 26. This operating system offers features like a screen breakdown from screenshots and increased live translation options. One notable feature is "Center Stage" for the front-facing camera. Despite recent setbacks in AI development, such as the postponed Siri improvements, Apple aims to remain competitive in this area.
New AirPods and Apple Watches
Alongside the iPhone 17, Apple also introduced new gadgets, such as the AirPods Pro 3, Apple Watch Series 11, and Apple Watch Ultra 3. The latest AirPods now feature live translation using on-device AI, a feature previously offered by Google’s Pixel devices, and are priced at $249.
The Apple Watch Series 11 introduces a "sleep score" tracker and hypertension notifications, though the latter awaits FDA approval. The Ultra 3 boasts the largest display and longest battery life of any Apple watch to date, priced at $799. The Series 11 costs $399, with the updated Apple Watch SE priced at $249. These products become available on September 19.
