Army Sergeant Sentenced for Shooting at Fort Stewart

The U.S. Army Office of Special Trial Counsel (OSTC) has announced a significant legal decision. Sgt. Quornelius S. Radford, 29, faces six consecutive life sentences for a shooting incident targeting his unit and his fiancé at Fort Stewart, Georgia. He may have the possibility of parole.

Radford’s convictions stem from an Aug. 6 shooting spree, where he attempted to murder five soldiers and his fiancé. In addition to life sentences, Radford loses all pay and allowances, is demoted to rank E-1, and receives a dishonorable discharge. His confinement will occur at the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

“This life sentence reflects the profound betrayal at the heart of this case,” said Maj. Matthew Fields, an OSTC prosecutor. “Soldiers expect threat from enemies, not from within their ranks.”

Fields highlighted Radford’s betrayal as critical, as it undermines trust within military formations. Army CID Special Agent in Charge Ryan O’Connor further emphasized that the conviction underlines the Army’s commitment to the security of service members and military communities.

Radford, from Jacksonville, Florida, joined the Army in 2018 as an automated logistics sergeant. Before this incident, he had no known disciplinary issues, although court records showed a hidden DUI arrest from May.

The event unfolded after a dispute with his fiancé. Concerned that Radford might be suicidal, the fiancé followed him to the military base. While trying to de-escalate the situation in the parking lot, Radford used a loaded firearm to shoot him.

Inside the unit’s offices, Radford shot four soldiers and tried to shoot a fifth. However, fellow soldiers intervened, restraining him until law enforcement arrived. Brig. Gen. John Lubas praised these soldiers, stating their actions likely prevented more casualties. Immediate medical aid by soldiers helped stabilize the wounded until EMS arrived.

All six victims survived but testified about the severe trauma inflicted by the attack. They called for Radford to receive the harshest penalty available.
