Arthur Fery: From Wild Card to Wimbledon Semifinalist

Jannik Sinner, ranked world No. 1, is set to compete against 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon men’s singles semifinal. On the opposite side of the bracket, third-ranked Alexander Zverev, recent winner of Roland-Garros, will face Arthur Fery.

Arthur Fery, ranked 114th, gained entry into the men’s singles draw as a wild card. The 23-year-old British player achieved an unexpected victory over Flavio Cobolli in straight sets on Centre Court. This win on July 8 marked Fery as the first male wild card to progress to a Wimbledon semifinal since 2001.

Historically, in the Open era, there have been only three other men’s wild cards reaching the semifinals at a major event: Jimmy Connors at the 1991 US Open, Henri Leconte at the 1992 French Open, and Goran Ivanisevic, who became the Wimbledon champion in 2001. Both Connors and Leconte lost in their semifinal matches.

Fery’s journey will continue on Friday, July 10. Currently, the home crowd cherishes his remarkable journey. “I always believed in myself and believed that I could be a top player in the world, but obviously, semifinalist of Wimbledon is something else,” Fery shared in a press conference after his match. He emphasized that he approaches each game independently, playing each match as it comes.

Fery admitted that he has limited his interaction with social media to maintain focus on his game. He is beginning to appreciate the significance of being the last British contender at Wimbledon this year. The anticipation builds around the prospects of Fery reaching the finals, potentially becoming the first British winner since Andy Murray in 2016.
