Austria Seals Victory Over Jordan

In their World Cup debut, Jordan faced off against Austria in an intense match at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium, also known as Levi’s Stadium. Austria secured a 3-1 win with a combination of an own goal by Yazan Al Arab in the 76th minute and a late penalty from Marko Arnautovic.

Austria initially took the lead with a remarkable long-range goal by Romano Schmid in the 21st minute. This marked the tenth goal from outside the box in the tournament, nearing the record set in Qatar 2022. However, Jordan battled back to score their first-ever World Cup goal in the 50th minute. Ali Olwan skillfully maneuvered past defenders to score off the post.

Despite Austria’s lead, veteran substitute Arnautovic thought he had restored their advantage in the 67th minute. However, the goal was disallowed due to a Stefan Posch handball. Austria continued to press and were rewarded with a second goal, which resulted from a deflection by Al Arab during a corner. Arnautovic then added a third goal from the penalty spot, after a Salim Obaid handball, in the 12th minute of stoppage time.

Despite initial doubts about the appeal of the match, the stadium was nearly full. San Francisco Bay Area Stadium hosted 68,527 fans, creating a vibrant atmosphere. Enthusiastic supporters filled all four tiers of the venue, with Jordanian supporters donning white shirts and Austrian fans in red.

Many attendees traveled great distances to witness the matchup, including fans from New York, Hawaii, and Ohio. The diverse crowd featured people wearing jerseys from other nations as well, underscoring the growing passion for soccer in the United States.

Jordan’s Performance in Their Debut

Ali Olwan made history for Jordan by scoring their first World Cup goal. The 26-year-old plays professionally for Al Sailiya in Qatar. During a counterattack, he masterfully navigated space on the left wing and curled a shot into the far corner, leaving Austria’s goalkeeper, Alexander Schlager, rooted to the spot.

Olwan’s goal was a tribute to teammate Yazan Al-Naimat, who missed the tournament due to an ACL injury. Holding up a No 11 jersey, Olwan honored Al-Naimat’s contributions to the team’s World Cup journey.

Jordan showed determination and skill, challenging Austria throughout the match. Although Jordan equalled Austria in attempts on goal, Austria’s experience and discipline paid off. Jordan now faces challenging matches against Algeria and Argentina in Group J, hoping to qualify as a top third-place team.

Arnautovic’s World Cup Milestone

At 37, Marko Arnautovic finally achieved his dream of scoring in a World Cup. He entered the match in the second half and immediately influenced the game.

Initially, Arnautovic’s goal was disallowed due to handball. Yet he persisted, contributing to the sequence that led to Austria’s second goal and converting a penalty to secure their victory. Arnautovic, Austria’s all-time top scorer and appearance maker, remains a crucial figure, having scored extensively in qualifying, trailing only Norway’s Erling Haaland in European eligibility.
