The New York Times recently published a Father’s Day essay that sparked backlash. It featured a story by Zach Ellams, a transgender parent, about becoming a ‘trans dad’ and raising a daughter while navigating gender identity. The essay, titled ‘To My Daughter, My Gender Was Never Complicated,’ was presented in comic-strip form.
In this work, Ellams, who was assigned female at birth but identifies as male, shares experiences of parenthood. The illustrations depict interactions between Ellams and their daughter, including questions about gender transition. One panel shows the child asking, “How long did you have breasts for, Dad?” while another reflects the daughter’s aspirations to grow a beard, having seen Ellams do so.
Critics criticized The Times for publishing this essay on Father’s Day. Katie Miller, a podcaster and former aide in the Department of Government Efficiency, tweeted concerns about the message sent to children. Sean Davis, CEO of The Federalist, commented on the essay’s portrayal of fatherhood. Seth Dillon, CEO of The Babylon Bee, echoed sentiments about the ongoing cultural debate.
Tim Young from The Heritage Foundation felt the article undermined traditional fatherhood. Additionally, President Donald Trump criticized The Times separately for different coverage, expressing his opinion on Truth Social.
The Times’ decision adds to recent criticisms. Earlier this year, an opinion column by Nicholas Kristof faced scrutiny from both critics and the Israeli Foreign Ministry.
