Republican New York gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman criticized Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul during a campaign event on the New York City subway. Blakeman called Hochul the “most pro-criminal governor” as he addressed the increase in violent crimes and safety concerns in public transportation.
“I haven’t heard from anyone saying the subways are safer,” Blakeman said. “Everyone says they feel less safe.” He emphasized the need for policies that ensure commuters feel secure.
Issues with Violent Transit Attacks
The Republican candidate toured the subway system, highlighting the impacts of Democratic policies on public safety. Blakeman, a former Port Authority commissioner, proposed solutions like hiring more police officers and conductors. He also stressed the importance of assisting those with mental health issues, suggesting that they need appropriate support rather than being left to roam the subways.
Blakeman criticized Governor Hochul and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani for inadequate public safety measures. “Crime on the subways has surged,” Blakeman noted, pledging to prioritize public safety and improve the cleanliness of the transit system.
He expressed opposition to congestion pricing, considering it a tax burden on the middle class. Additionally, he pointed to the need for more conductors, criticizing Hochul for vetoing legislation that would require additional crew members on subway trains.
Public Safety and Legislative Concerns
The debate between Hochul and Blakeman also touched on Hochul’s support for various criminal justice reforms. Blakeman singled out cashless bail, the Raise the Age initiative, the HALT Act, and the Clean Slate law as measures that compromise public safety.
He asserted that these policies, which have been criticized by police groups, make communities less secure. “Whether it’s cashless bail or refusing cooperation with ICE, these policies have made us less safe,” Blakeman argued.
Blakeman put forth the idea that an increased presence of conductors and police in the subway system would enhance commuter safety, criticizing the current administration for not taking these steps.
