Brandon Aiyuk’s Uncertain Future with the San Francisco 49ers

Brandon Aiyuk’s unresolved status remains a significant issue as the San Francisco 49ers commence their training camp. The team has offered no update, and the next action seems to be up to the wide receiver. Aiyuk is currently on the reserve/left squad list, a position he’s held since the end of 2025. After missing last season due to a standoff with the team, the All-Pro wide receiver might need to apply for NFL reinstatement if he plans for a return in 2026. Alternatively, he could expedite progress by reporting to training camp or notifying the 49ers of his intent to return.

The tension between Aiyuk and the 49ers has been building for about a year. The disagreement intensified last July, when San Francisco revoked the remaining guaranteed money in his contract. This action followed his absence from rehab work for severe knee injuries. Aiyuk’s social media comments have only fueled speculation regarding his future, with past posts hinting at his dissatisfaction.

Roddy White, a former NFL wide receiver, voiced his opinion on the situation, stating, “I think this situation has been handled wrongly by the 49ers.” White emphasized the need for patience and suggested the team should have supported Aiyuk’s recovery more actively.

“They should have done all they could to get him back on the field to give him an opportunity to show he can still play football,” White noted during an interview with Hard Rock Bet.

Last week, the 49ers brought back Deebo Samuel, which prompted another cryptic response from Aiyuk via Instagram. In his post, he questioned whether San Francisco truly wanted a “real reunion.” Aiyuk has not limited his comments to the 49ers, also expressing frustration with the NFL Players Association. Additionally, his interest in joining the Commanders has waned following remarks about Washington’s quarterback, Jayden Daniels. Daniels downplayed any tensions, stating that he and Aiyuk resolved matters privately.

Both athletes were teammates in 2019 at Arizona State University.

General Manager John Lynch expressed the team’s focus during a press session on July 25, saying the organization is concentrating on current players in camp. Lynch stated, “We wish him well, we wish his family well.”

Meanwhile, the 49ers faced another challenge when swelling in Ricky Pearsall’s right knee led to him being placed on injured reserve. Pearsall was anticipated as a potential breakout star but now joins other sidelined receivers. Aiyuk appeared in seven games in the 2024 season before his injury, following a standout season in 2023 with 1,342 receiving yards and achieving second-team All-Pro status.
