Brenda Fricker: Remembering a Talented Irish Actress

Brenda Fricker, acclaimed for her role as Bridget Fagan Brown in the film My Left Foot, has passed away at 81. Her agent, Phil Belfield, confirmed she died on Thursday night in Dublin after a period of ill health.

Fricker made history as the first Irish woman to win an Academy Award. She earned the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 1990. She played the determined mother of Christy Brown, portrayed by Daniel Day-Lewis, in the film. Day-Lewis won Best Actor for his role as Brown, a man with cerebral palsy controlling only his left foot.

“We will never see her like again and the world is lesser for the lack of her,” said Belfield. “I was honored to know, love and work with her and she will always have a place in my heart and in the heart of many film and TV fans.”

Brenda Fricker featured in over 90 films and TV shows from 1964 to 2024. She was notable for her role in the 1992 film Home Alone 2: Lost in New York as a homeless woman who befriends Macaulay Culkin’s character in Central Park.

Fricker was part of the original cast of the BBC drama Casualty and starred with Cate Blanchett in Veronica Guerin, the story of an Irish journalist murdered in 1996.

Born in Dublin in 1945, Fricker received the city’s highest honor this year, the Freedom of the City. Her autobiography, She Died Young: A Life in Fragments, published in September 2025, details her childhood and struggles with sexual violence and mental health issues. It became an Irish Sunday Times bestseller.

Simon Harris, Ireland’s deputy prime minister, expressed the nation’s loss of a “national treasure.”

“She truly was among the greatest exports this country has produced and an ambassador for Irish talent on the world stage,” he stated. “Quite simply, we will never see the like of her ever again.”
