Brit Hume Questions Trump’s Media Ban

51 minutes ago 0

Fox News chief political analyst Brit Hume scrutinizes President Donald Trump’s decision to ban media organizations from the White House. Although he acknowledges biased coverage by some networks, Hume doubts the ban’s effectiveness in altering media behavior. He suggests the move primarily aims to galvanize the president’s supporters.

A federal judge appointed by Trump extended an order blocking the administration from banning reporters from CNN, MS NOW, and Politico at the White House. U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly issued a preliminary injunction, allowing these journalists to retain their press credentials as their lawsuit progresses, according to The Associated Press. This action indicates a likely First Amendment violation by the administration’s restrictions.

A White House official informed Fox News Digital of plans to appeal the decision, defending their stance and criticizing the ruling. The official stated that “fake news” has no place in the Oval Office and mentioned intentions to appeal the “misguided decision.”

“We are grateful that the court ruled in favor of our clients CNN, MS NOW, and Politico,” Theodore Boutrous Jr., attorney for the organizations, expressed. He accused Trump of punishing unfavorable reporting and emphasized the ruling’s importance in protecting constitutional rights.

The ruling expanded on Kelly’s earlier determination that the media outlets would likely succeed on their Fifth Amendment due process claims. Now, he also found potential First Amendment violations, as the restrictions seemed driven by Trump’s dissatisfaction with their coverage rather than by national security concerns.

The Justice Department’s attorneys argued that White House press access is a privilege, asserting the president’s authority in credential allocation. The preliminary injunction ensures that the media outlets maintain their White House credentials as the lawsuit proceeds.
