New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson remains focused despite the dramatic Game 4 of the NBA Finals, where the Knicks made the largest comeback in championship history. Brunson emphasized the importance of treating the series against the San Antonio Spurs as tied at “0-0,” even though New York leads 3-1, just one win away from their first NBA title since 1973.
Brunson spoke to NBC News about maintaining focus as the NBA trophy approaches. He stressed the need for accountability within the team and advised not to get caught up in external commentary, whether positive or negative. Speaking about fan expectations, Brunson stated, “The fans are going to be the fans, but for us, we got to do our jobs.”
Despite the emotional Game 4 triumph, Brunson maintains his focus. The Knicks overcame a 29-point deficit and secured a 107-106 victory. Brunson scored 36 points and made crucial shots in the fourth quarter, marking his best Finals performance yet. This victory improved the Knicks’ record to 2-0 in the postseason with deficits of 20 or more points in the fourth quarter.
Discussing the team’s comeback ability, Brunson acknowledged the undesirable position of trailing but praised the team’s determination. “We just keep fighting,” he said. He believes the habits developed could carry over into Game 5, regardless of Game 4’s outcome. “It starts with just the mentality of it, just giving it all, knowing that you can be down 29 and claw all the way back.”
Brunson has not delivered his absolute best during these Finals, averaging 29.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game and shooting 39.6% against the formidable Spurs defense. However, his Game 4 performance has brought New York closer to their first championship in over fifty years. Brunson remains adamant about staying present and not looking ahead.
When asked about the significance of Knicks fans if Game 4 was their last at Madison Square Garden this season, Brunson expressed deep appreciation. “I love our fans, and they mean the world to me and to this organization. They deserve it, but I think most importantly, I got to do what I’ve done and focus on what I got to do.”
