Buccaneers Rookie Cornerbacks Make Impact in Preseason

1 hour ago 0

For aspiring NFL players seeking a roster spot, preseason games offer vital opportunities. These games are more than mere exhibition matches; they provide moments for players to prove their worth to the coaching staff.

This was evident for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ cornerbacks on Friday night as they faced off against the New York Jets. Two players seized the opportunity to make their mark.

Undrafted rookie Ayden Garnes is acutely aware of the need to impress. Lacking the assurance of numerous chances, every play counts for him. On Friday, he maximized his time on the field.

During the game, Garnes intercepted a pass from Bailey Zappe and returned it for a touchdown. Such a play stands out, particularly for a young defensive back aiming to secure a spot on the team’s roster. An interception is commendable, but converting it into a touchdown significantly raises a player’s profile.

Despite the impressive play, Garnes must continue to demonstrate his abilities before the Buccaneers finalize their roster decisions. However, moments like this are crucial for bringing him to the attention of the coaching team.

“The first thing I thought of was first, just thanking God,” Garnes stated about the play on WFLA, per the Buccaneers’ official website. “I got the opportunity to come out here and then make a play like that. That’s all him, that’s all God.”

He further expressed gratitude for his team, saying, “I’m just grateful that I am able to have this team backing me, to give me the opportunity to be on the field, to make that play, and to get back to the sideline and celebrate with my teammates, it’s once of a lifetime.”

While preseason performances do not guarantee a roster spot, they are influential. Garnes’ recent game certainly enhanced his chances.
