Busy Philipps Discusses Brain Tumor Diagnosis

Busy Philipps recently shared her journey with a rare brain tumor diagnosis. In an interview, the 47-year-old actress recounted the shocking moment her doctor informed her of the tumor’s presence, a day after her ‘Dawson’s Creek’ co-star, James Van Der Beek, passed away from colorectal cancer.

Receiving the Diagnosis

Philipps recalled her doctor, Dr. Devinsky, breaking the news candidly. She described feeling overwhelmed, needing to sit down as her doctor explained the seriousness of her condition. She was told, This isn’t any of the other things they said it might be. This is a real tumor inside your brain, and it must be removed.

Following the diagnosis, Philipps connected with Dr. John Golfinos at NYU Langone to schedule a five-hour surgery on March 2. During the procedure, surgeons removed a 2.6-centimeter mass. Biopsy results identified the tumor as a grade 2 oligodendroglioma, a rare form affecting 1,100 to 1,300 people annually in the U.S. According to her neuro-oncologist, Dr. Alexandra Miller, it is malignant but has the best prognosis among malignant gliomas.

The Journey to Detection

The tumor’s discovery was prompted by a conversation Philipps had with her cousin’s husband, a doctor, about her desire for a Prenuvo scan. Her primary care physician had previously deemed it unnecessary given her overall health. Her cousin’s husband, however, supported her choice, advising that knowledge is essential. Spurred by this, Philipps proceeded with the scan.

Following the scan, Philipps was informed of a brain lesion and urged to undergo an MRI, which confirmed the tumor’s presence. Dr. Golfinos mentioned that the timing of the detection made surgery easier, noting that a delayed discovery could have resulted in a tumor two or three times larger.

Post-Surgery Challenges

After her initial recovery, Philipps faced another hurdle when a dermatologist raised concerns about her incision site, leading to the discovery of a staphylococcus infection. This required additional surgery, leaving Philipps feeling as though she was back at the beginning.

Despite these health challenges, Philipps continued to work, filming the legal drama, ‘Cupertino,’ where she portrays the ex-wife of an AI billionaire funding a new law firm. Fortunately, she does not require chemotherapy or radiation but will have regular scans to monitor for reoccurrence.

Reflecting on her experience, Philipps emphasized the importance of trusting one’s instincts. She noted that while doctors may advise against concern, individuals should heed their own feelings when sensing something is amiss, and gathering information is empowering.
