The collaboration between Mike McDaniel and the Los Angeles Chargers has faced challenges early in the season. Across the initial six games, the Chargers have struggled to secure a win. This disappointing performance has sparked discussions about potential changes in the offensive strategy.
Despite these setbacks, head coach Jim Harbaugh maintains his support for McDaniel. In a statement to The Athletic, Harbaugh expressed his confidence in McDaniel’s abilities, noting his talent and work ethic. He highlighted that the team used their bye week for self-assessment, influencing their decision to retain McDaniel.
“We’re very confident in Mike and his talent, his work ethic, and his ability,” Harbaugh said. “We continue to be.”
The Chargers were off in Week 7 and previously scored only six points in a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs during Week 6. This performance further dropped their already low scoring average to 15 points per game, the worst in the league. Unlike the Chargers, every other NFL team has managed at least one victory, making them the season’s only winless team so far.
Prior to joining the Chargers, McDaniel spent four seasons with the Miami Dolphins and earned a reputation as a leading offensive strategist. Harbaugh brought him on board with hopes of enhancing the team’s offensive play.
McDaniel sees great potential in Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert. He has implemented changes to Herbert’s playing style, such as adjusting his shotgun stance and focusing on improving his footwork. Herbert also practiced simulated throws using a green water ball to refine his technique.
However, these efforts have yet to yield results, with Herbert’s eight interceptions matching the highest in the league.
McDaniel’s past achievements include orchestrating the Dolphins’ noteworthy 2023 offense, which set records by scoring 70 points and achieving over 700 yards in a victory over the Denver Broncos.
Chantz Martin, a sports journalist for Fox News Digital, reports on the unfolding dynamics of the Chargers’ season and McDaniel’s continued efforts to revitalize their performance.
