Massive Data Breach Hits Department of Homeland Security

1 hour ago 0

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is currently investigating a significant data breach that may have revealed the identities and contact details of tens of thousands of employees. Sources have described this breach as a severe security incident affecting approximately 40,000 DHS personnel, including 10,000 from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The compromised data reportedly includes names, titles, locations, phone numbers, and email addresses of DHS and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) employees, including Border Patrol staff. Sources have confirmed the authenticity of some of this information.

According to reports, the breach has been attributed to an anti-fascist hacking group named the ‘Department of Peace,’ which took responsibility for acquiring the data. The group claims the breach provides ‘anonymity with accountability’ and suggests that DHS employees should have their information available since they possess details about the public.

DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin has emphasized the potential threats faced by employees and committed to ensuring their protection. The department is actively addressing the breach.

Distributed Denial of Secrets, a data leak website, has confirmed the release of data related to the breach, which includes several undercover ICE agents. Additionally, a tool has been developed by the group to enable public searches.

This breach is part of broader concerns regarding the security of government personnel records. Previously, the Pentagon disclosed a similar breach of its database, compromising sensitive personal details of over 2.76 million military and civilian individuals.

Emma Best, co-founder of Distributed Denial of Secrets, stated that replacing anonymity with accountability was the goal.
