Chinese Woman Makes History with Fields Medal Win

For the first time, a woman from China has been awarded the Fields Medal, the highest honor in mathematics, which highlights both achievement and potential. The medal is often compared to the Nobel Prize in prestige and is awarded every four years to promising mathematicians under 40. This year marks a significant milestone as Hong Wang, a Chinese mathematician, joins the exclusive group of female recipients. She is also the third individual of Chinese origin to be honored with this prestigious accolade, joining Yu Deng among this year’s winners.

Breaking New Ground

The Fields Medals were presented at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Philadelphia. The 2023 recipients include Hong Wang and Yu Deng from China, along with American John Pardon and Canadian Jacob Tsimerman. Ulrike Tillmann, vice-president and incoming president of the International Mathematical Union (IMU), noted the importance of women’s contributions at such esteemed levels and emphasized the significance of Wang’s victory.

Wang, originally from Guilin City, captivated the mathematical community by solving the Kakeya conjecture in three dimensions, a problem unresolved for a century. Her work, in collaboration with Joshua Zahl from the University of British Columbia, paved the way for breakthroughs in multiple mathematical fields. Similarly, Yu Deng’s research on mathematical principles underlying physics reflects a long-standing pursuit to derive fundamental laws, as praised by the IMU.

Historical Context and Reflections

Hong Wang is the first Chinese woman to win this prize, while Yu Deng is known for his research on the axiomatic foundations of physics, done in partnership with Zaher Hani and Xiao Ma. Their simultaneous recognition marks a first for China’s mathematicians, a representation enhanced by earlier winners like Yau Shing-Tung and Terence Tao.

American mathematician John Pardon and Canada’s Jacob Tsimerman were also commended for significant contributions to topology, geometry, and algebraic geometry. The announcement of the winners, initially leaked on the International Congress’s website, sparked joy and introspection on Chinese social media, as many celebrated the recognition of two Chinese mathematicians on a global stage.

Questions on Academic Migration

Although both Wang and Deng began their academic journeys in China, they pursued further studies and research abroad, with Wang having trained in Europe and Deng completing his studies in the United States. This trend led some Chinese social media users to question why such talents leave China for further education.

Despite concerns of academic migration, China has been working to counteract this by offering incentives for scholars to return or collaborate with China, such as the “K-visa” for tech experts and the QiMing project aimed at attracting foreign talent. The awards come amidst these efforts, poised to retain intellectual capital within China.

Beyond Prestige

Alongside the Fields Medal, other top awards were announced by the IMU, including the Chern Medal for Oxford University’s Graeme Segal and the Abacus Medal for Shayan Oveis Gharan of the University of Washington. Each Fields Medalist receives a gold medal with an imprint of ancient Greek mathematician Archimedes and a monetary award of 15,000 Canadian dollars.

For Deng, the pursuit of mathematics is driven by curiosity rather than fame or financial rewards. “Our understanding of the physical universe on the mathematical level is still extremely small,” he explained. The excitement of solving complex questions is his primary motivation.
