On Thursday, President Donald Trump addressed the people of Minnesota, urging them to respond assertively to Somali immigrants in the state. The call to action came in the wake of federal charges against a Somali American accused of plotting a terror attack at the Mall of America.
In a Truth Social post, the president expressed concerns about the impact of Somali immigrants in Minnesota. He claimed the state was experiencing rampant violence and unrest. President Trump criticized Democratic Governor Tim Walz, accusing him of incompetence and abandonment.
“You have been robbed, and abandoned by your State Government. Your Governor is an incompetent thief who doesn’t want to get involved. He just wants to get out of town with as much as he can steal, and then, lead a quiet life,” Trump asserted in his message.
The Somalians should not be allowed to get away with what they are doing. They view you as weak and stupid people. Fight back Minnesota, fight back!
The president’s statement followed the announcement by the FBI and the Department of Justice about the arrest of Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud. The 18-year-old, a U.S. citizen of Somali descent, faced accusations of planning to join a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) in Somalia for a potential attack in Minnesota.
Trump has historically criticized Governor Walz regarding fraud allegations tied to the Somali community. An extensive immigration enforcement effort in late 2025 in Minneapolis and St. Paul resulted in the fatal shootings of two U.S. citizens by federal agents.
Newsweek has sought further comments on President Trump’s statements and has reached out to key Minnesota politicians, including Governor Walz, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, and Democratic Senators Tina Smith and Amy Klobuchar.
