Claude Lemieux: A Remembered Champion in the NHL

The NHL and the sports world continue to grieve the loss of Claude Lemieux, a two-time Stanley Cup champion who passed away at the age of 60. Lemieux’s passing was unexpected, occurring shortly after he appeared at the Montreal Canadiens’ home arena. He carried the torch before the team’s Game 3 against the Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference final. In his signature red and blue Canadiens jersey, number 32, Lemieux smiled while carrying the flame onto the dimly lit rink.

Tributes for Lemieux flowed swiftly as news of his death circulated. His daughter, Claudia Lemieux, was among those who honored one of hockey’s most respected and debated figures. On Instagram Stories, she reposted a New Jersey Devils tribute to her father, adding a touching statement: “No words to express the level of devastation we feel. I love you forever daddy. Forever your only girl.”

Lemieux’s son, Brendan, paid tribute on social media by posting a photo of three generations of their family. “I love you dad! My son’s favorite person is going to watch from above for a while. We will see you,” he wrote, including a red heart emoji. Brendan, following his father’s footsteps, spent a decade in the NHL, most recently playing for Carolina during the 2023-24 season.

As a rookie in 1986, Claude Lemieux scored one of the most iconic goals in Canadiens history. He scored a backhand shot over Hartford goaltender Mike Liut’s glove in Game 7 of the second round. Lemieux was honored in 2025 at the Colorado Avalanche’s 30th anniversary celebration of the 1995-1996 season.

Lemieux, who grew up in Mont-Laurier in western Quebec, left a lasting impact on his teammates and opponents. Former Canadiens center Doug Gilmour remarked on Lemieux’s ability to aggravate rivals while earning his teammates’ respect. Reflecting on the 1989 Stanley Cup Final, Gilmour said, “He was a pain to play against, but you wanted him on your team.”
