After a 7-6 finish last season, Clemson and head coach Dabo Swinney aimed for a turnaround. Despite having one of the top wide receiver duos in T.J. Moore and Bryant Wesco Jr., and strengthening the team with top transfers like Chris Johnson Jr., Elliot Washington II, and London Merritt, as well as securing the 20th-ranked recruiting class, the Tigers still faced challenges.
In Lane Kiffin’s first game as LSU’s head coach, his team defeated Clemson decisively, winning 51-10. Clemson’s offense managed only 145 total yards, raising further concerns about Swinney’s future, especially after last season’s struggles.
According to CBS Sports’ Robby Kalland, Clemson might save $3 million by releasing Swinney during the 2026 season. His buyout follows a declining structure, with a $57 million payout now compared to $60 million if they wait until 2027. This season marks the final year of such a contract structure.
Despite recent setbacks, Swinney remains a significant figure in Clemson football, leading the team to two national championships and winning multiple accolades, including three Paul “Bear” Bryant Awards and nine ACC championships. His impressive 187-54 record, with a .776 winning percentage, ranks among college football’s elite.
Yet, the sport’s competitive nature means further losses could bring the prospect of a buyout closer. Clemson’s upcoming games include hosting Georgia Southern, facing ACC rival UNC, and matchups against Cal, Miami, Charleston Southern, Virginia Tech, and Florida State, all prior to November.
