Communication Challenges in the WNBA: Kayla McBride’s Experience

Minnesota Lynx star Kayla McBride has expressed concerns about the way the WNBA communicates with its players, particularly in the context of the 3-point contest. Recently, McBride clarified her absence from the event, highlighting a lack of a formal invite.

McBride took to Instagram to address the situation, stating, “I received a half-hearted invite to the 3-point contest through my agent in a random text message 48 hours ago, not officially.” She emphasized that rumors suggesting she avoided the contest should not be believed.

She criticized such assumptions and directed attention to the event’s participants, including players like Bridget Carleton of Portland Fire, Azzi Fudd of Dallas Wings, and Natisha Hiedeman of Seattle Storm. McBride urged fans to celebrate these competitors, referring to them as “great shooters” and wishing them luck in the contest.

At 34 years old, McBride has a history in the 3-point contest, having participated three times without a win, most recently in 2024. Currently, she is achieving career-best performance with an average of 18.2 points per game through 28 games, matching her 2018 record.

Similarly, New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu faced a comparable situation. Although Ionescu was the reigning champion, she communicated that she never received an official invitation to the contest.

The contest is scheduled for Friday at 8 p.m. ET and will proceed without the participation of McBride, Ionescu, and Caitlin Clark.
