Portage Residents Face Aftermath of Storm

Portage resident Janie Gray recounted her experience during the August 11 derecho that hit the area. With three trees falling on her house, Gray described the incident as frightening. “It was pretty scary,” she shared, while attending the Portage Strong event.

Gray prioritized safety, grabbing an emergency bag before attending to her children amid the chaos. Despite the extensive damage, everyone remained unharmed; the neighborhood appeared transformed by the storm’s devastation.

The city has been deeply affected, with prolonged power outages challenging residents.

Gray’s household, among many without electricity, has been navigating life without power for 11 days now, relying on patience and resilience.

Severe Power Outages

The utility company NIPSCO reported that as of Saturday afternoon, 30,789 customers were still without power. In Portage, 3,870 customers were affected, while more than 17,500 customers in Gary shared the same plight. The service provider expects power restoration by the end of the day Tuesday, following the dire consequences of 99 mph winds causing widespread damage.

Mayor Austin Bonta emphasized that the Portage Strong event was not a celebration of power restoration but rather acknowledged the community’s strength in crisis.

Collaborative Efforts in Recovery

In response, various organizations have stepped forward to assist affected residents. The Chicago Bears announced donations totaling $200,000 to Catholic Charities in Chicago and Gary. Additionally, Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana contributed $100,000 to assist recovery efforts.

Residents like Daniella Douglas have shared stories of personal loss and perseverance. With the family experiencing sheltering in place for the first time, Douglas described the storm’s ferocity with the sky turning ominously green.

Other residents, such as Andrew and Jessica Law, continue to manage daily challenges without full power, relying on a generator to stay in one room. The financial burden of maintaining generator fuel intensifies the struggle.

Community Spirit and Resilience

Despite adversity, Portage residents are showing resilience. Nate Uldricks shared thoughts on planting new trees, demonstrating optimism amidst loss.

Mayor Bonta conveyed the importance of collective efforts towards recovery, not only emphasizing community support but also recognizing how far the city has progressed since the storm.

The event offered food, games, and mental health support, highlighting the community’s focus on healing together.

Wayne Antusas, an event organizer, voiced satisfaction over the community’s participation and support. He expressed hope that these efforts will strengthen community bonds further.

Volunteers Mobilize

Portage Ready team recruited volunteers to assist in recovery initiatives. Morgan Luna and Councilwoman Gina Giese-Hurst shared their experiences of engaging with residents and offering help to those in need.

Giese-Hurst underscored the importance of volunteer efforts and the healing it brings, as people work together to support those affected.
