At present, Buffalo Bills running back James Cook faces increasing scrutiny for a persistent flaw in his game.
Cook, who is currently third in the NFL with 532 rushing yards this season and led the league with 1,621 yards last year, has been struggling with fumbles. In the first five games this season, he has fumbled four times, more than any other player in the NFL. Notably, two of these fumbles occurred during Buffalo’s recent 37-34 overtime victory over the Los Angeles Rams. His last fumble almost cost the team the game.
Coach Joe Brady expressed frustration with Cook’s turnover tendency, noting Cook’s 11 fumbles across his last 23 games, including playoffs. Brady warned that continued turnovers might lead to a decrease in Cook’s playing time.
“Right now, we’re putting the ball in harm’s way,” Brady said. “And the way that we lose football games is we turn the ball over. Our two best players turned the ball over last night, and James has put the ball on the ground. Look, he’s doing some good things running the football.”
Brady acknowledged Cook’s talent as a runner but stressed that his fumbles are undermining his performance.
“And I don’t want to lose sight of how great he’s running the ball right now. But putting the ball on the ground — it’s negating all the positives. And I have all the confidence in him, that’s why I put him back out there. But at some point there has to be consequences when we’re putting negative stuff out there.”
Brady also mentioned having ongoing discussions with Cook about the importance of securing the ball.
Should Brady decide to reduce Cook’s workload, backup Ray Davis might receive more opportunities. Davis rushed for 275 yards and had 10 receptions for 86 yards and two touchdowns last season. Additionally, Ty Johnson and Frank Gore Jr. might see increased roles in the backfield.
