Controversy over Soccer Star’s World Cup Leave for Child’s Birth

56 minutes ago 0

On June 24, 2026, French television host France Pierron faced backlash after her comments about the decision of Belgium forward Jérémy Doku to leave the World Cup for the birth of his first child. Doku announced his plans to fly to London to be with his wife, which led to Pierron’s critique during her appearance on the TV show L’Equipe de Choc where she described childbirth as “a disgusting moment, excuse me, where the dad is useless.”

Her comments ignited criticism, leading her to issue an apology on Tuesday, expressing regret and acknowledging the potential hurt caused by her remarks. She clarified that her statements did not represent a collective view, posting on X, “These remarks are solely my own and in no way reflect a collective position,” and apologized: “I understand that they may have shocked, offended, or hurt some of you, and I am sorry for that.” Her employer, L’Equipe, also apologized to Doku, distancing themselves from the comments and affirming they do not align with their values.

Jérémy Doku successfully traveled to London in time for the birth of his son, Praise, sharing his joy and gratitude on social media. He expressed his appreciation for the support he and his family received: “Shireen and Praise are doing great, and my heart is full of gratitude. Welcoming my son into the world is one of the greatest blessings God has ever given me.” Doku looked forward to returning to soccer and representing Belgium on the world stage.

Belgium captain Youri Tielemans stood by Doku, celebrating the arrival of his teammate’s child as an event of profound beauty. He remarked, “I think having a child is the most beautiful thing in the world that you can have, and being there, it’s more than normal as a dad, as a mom, obviously. But yeah, being there as a dad, for myself, I have three and it’s memories you can’t take back. So, yeah, very happy for him.”

Despite missing Belgium’s 0-0 draw against Iran due to respiratory illness, Doku was able to be with his wife for their child’s birth. His presence did not affect his commitment to Belgium’s World Cup endeavors, with the team facing New Zealand on Friday at BC Place, aiming for a place in the knockout round after two draws in earlier matches.
