Controversy Surrounds NYC Mayor Mamdani’s Push to Arrest Netanyahu

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani incited a heated debate when he publicly advocated for the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his anticipated visit to the U.N. General Assembly. Mamdani accused Netanyahu of war crimes, leading to sharp criticism from Netanyahu’s office. The controversy includes anti-Israel streamer Hasan Piker, who spoke at a college Democrats convention.

A 2023 clip featuring Mamdani, in which he refers to Israel as “an idea,” has resurfaced, drawing criticism amid his clash with Netanyahu. On the “Here & Everywhere: The Solidarity Roundtables” podcast, Mamdani expressed that Israel represents an idea rather than a place, criticizing American political support for Israel’s actions in Gaza. He highlighted outdated political answers that ignore the current reality, which makes a two-state solution impractical.

“Israel is a not a place; it is not the country, it’s an idea,” Mamdani stated.

Critics say these comments reflect a pattern of Mamdani’s critical stance toward Israel, which alienates the Jewish community. His administration is considering whether it can arrest Netanyahu during his visit to New York.

Netanyahu’s Response and Community Backlash

Netanyahu’s office labeled Mamdani’s arrest intentions as a “bogus warrant.” Mamdani, originally from Uganda, won the Democratic Party’s primary for NYC mayor in June. Critics argue Mamdani’s views are isolated and uninformed. Hussain Abdul-Hussain, from the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, criticized Mamdani’s perspective as narrow and detached.

“He lives in a bubble where everyone thinks like him,” Abdul-Hussain stated.

Public figures such as conservative commentator Stephen Miller have compared Mamdani’s statements about Israel to similar remarks about America. Boundless CEO Aviva Klompas defended Israel’s right to self-determination, noting its reality as a home to nearly 10 million people.

“Israel is certainly an idea… and Israel is very much a place,” Klompas emphasized.

Legal and Political Implications

Mamdani has criticized Israel’s actions in Gaza and accused the country of genocide while supporting pro-Palestinian initiatives. He avoided NYC’s annual Israel Day Parade, marking a departure from tradition.

On Sunday, Mamdani revealed ongoing discussions by NYC’s Law Department about legalities surrounding Netanyahu’s arrest. He supports the ICC’s arrest warrant issued against Netanyahu for alleged war crimes. Mamdani reiterated this stance in an interview with the New York Times.

“Prime Minister Netanyahu belongs in The Hague,” Mamdani said.

Netanyahu is scheduled to visit NYC in September for the U.N. General Assembly. Mamdani maintains his support for the ICC’s stance despite the backlash. The ICC targeted Netanyahu in 2024 over Gaza-related allegations.
