Controversy Surrounds WNBA Star Sophie Cunningham’s Comments

Despite her stance, WNBA coaches and media pundits have criticized her, labeling her as exclusionary and even “anti-Black” and against transgender individuals.

Moreover, conversations on social media have reignited President Donald Trump’s 2022 comments about coaching a women’s basketball team. Trump’s remarks resurfaced this week, fueling further debate. During a speech at the America First Policy Institute in July 2022, Trump claimed he would be the greatest women’s basketball coach. He jokingly suggested recruiting LeBron James as a woman to dominate the league.

“I’ll tell you what – I’d be the greatest women’s basketball coach in history,” Trump said. “Because I’d go up to LeBron James and ask, ‘Did you ever desire to be a woman?’ My team would be unbeatable.”

The clip gained traction again just before the Indiana Fever’s game against the New York Liberty. This marked the Fever’s second home game since Cunningham’s comments were highlighted in an ESPN feature.

Women’s sports activists have rallied in support of Cunningham outside arenas, including a recent event in Minneapolis before the Fever’s game against the Minnesota Lynx. The rally faced opposition from pro-trans activists, one of whom displayed a sign with derogatory language aimed at Cunningham supporters.

Despite the backlash, Cunningham stands by her statements. On July 22, she reaffirmed, “I said what I said. Protecting children is important, including little girls. I stand by my belief.”
