The Brave Legacy of Kaziha, Abdullah, and Awad

Mansour Kaziha, known as the shopkeeper who often let children take candy for free, had been a fixture at the Islamic Center since the 1980s. He managed the center’s store and served as the mosque’s handyman. He fed hundreds during the month of Ramadan, with his lentil soup being a favorite.

Amin Abdullah, a diligent security guard, always greeted people with a smile and offered sage advice. His daughter, Hawaa, recalls her father’s dedication to his role, sometimes forgoing meals to ensure the safety of those at the mosque. Abdullah’s protective nature intensified after the mass shooting at a New Zealand mosque in 2019.

Nadir Awad, a cheerful and funny individual, lived nearby and frequently visited the mosque to pray. Although not officially part of the mosque’s staff, Awad didn’t hesitate to act when danger arose on that harrowing Monday.

In the aftermath of the attack, the community is grieving for these heroes while grappling with growing frustration over anti-Muslim sentiment. The shooting is being investigated as a hate crime, with FBI special agent Mark Remily noting that the teenage suspects held a broad hatred towards various races and religions.
