In Oregon, a high school football coach has been dismissed following a decisive victory over a rival team. Zach Loboy, the head coach at Marist Catholic High School, was terminated after his team defeated Cottage Grove with a score of 63-0.
The school announced the decision via email, stating that they needed to align leadership with the institution’s mission and values. Part of these values involved refraining from actions like performing an onside kick when leading 57-0, an action reportedly taken by Loboy during the first half of the game.
According to reports, the game concluded at halftime and did not resume. Garrett Bridgens, Cottage Grove’s Athletic Director, explained that halting the game was a decision made in the community’s best interest.
The disparity in team performance was evident, as last season, Cottage Grove’s team had a disappointing record of 1-8, having been outscored 105-0 over their last three games. Marist Catholic, on the other hand, showed superior talent.
The school’s statement, obtained by KVAL in Oregon, emphasized the importance of supporting players and maintaining a positive environment for the team. They acknowledged the challenge a mid-season coaching change poses to players and families, and they asked for understanding and support during the transition.
Zach Dean, a writer with OutKick, shared his astonishment at the incident, noting his extensive experience in covering high school football and how this situation differed from others he has encountered.
