Democrats Distance Themselves from Hasan Piker Amid Controversy

Michigan Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has distanced himself from the left-wing streamer Hasan Piker following backlash over Piker’s controversial remarks. Stephanie Hamill, a political commentator, discussed the political consequences and the strong criticism from Sen. Jon Ossoff of Georgia. This controversy highlights growing tensions within the party as the 2026 midterm elections approach.

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) defended Piker, criticizing both Democrats and Republicans for targeting the streamer. The DSA’s official account argued that the establishment, including both parties and the media, has shifted focus from DSA wins to personal attacks and symbolic resolutions. They questioned why similar attention isn’t devoted to addressing issues like the healthcare crisis affecting thousands of Americans annually.

Hasan Piker, described by some as becoming the ‘face of the progressive movement,’ claimed that criticism from Democrats was influenced by AIPAC. Many pro-Israel Democrats have urged their peers to distance themselves from Piker, despite the DSA’s support for the 35-year-old commentator. Some Democrats have openly criticized Piker’s remarks about Jews.

Senator Jon Ossoff has been vocal in his condemnation, stating his rejection of rhetoric that suggests policy advocacy risks violence against the Jewish community. Ossoff’s statement came after Piker made controversial comments during an August Twitch stream about American Jews and Israel.

Representative Jared Moskowitz of Florida, who is Jewish, echoed these sentiments, indicating that the party may not accommodate both his and Piker’s views. Moskowitz joined three other Democrats in proposing an amendment to a Republican resolution condemning socialism. The amendment aimed to retain language denouncing socialism while removing election-related provisions. Although the amendment did not advance, it stands as a statement against socialist ideology.
