The Department of War (DOW) recently dismissed allegations from Sen. Mark Kelly regarding War Secretary Pete Hegseth’s alleged bias against women and Black military officers. The statements from Pentagon spokesmen reiterated that promotions in the military are determined by merit.
During an interview with Katie Couric, Kelly accused the department of discriminatory practices, pointing to dismissals that he believes were racially and gender-driven. The Pentagon maintains that such decisions are merit-based and devoid of identity considerations.
Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell emphasized, “Military promotions are given to those who have earned them. The Department will never consider a service member’s identity in promotions.” This sentiment was echoed in statements given to Fox News Digital.
Senator Kelly specifically mentioned cases including the removal of Gen. CQ Brown and Adm. Lisa Franchetti. He argues these actions undermine the military’s experienced leadership. Hegseth is accused of blocking advancements based on race and gender. Kelly fears these practices might drive capable leaders away.
Acting Pentagon press secretary Joel Valdez also defended the merit-based system. Valdez stated, “Promotions based solely on race and gender is wrong.” The department contends that performance guides promotions, not demographic factors.
The situation arises amidst broader leadership changes in the Pentagon. Officials cite meritocratic principles in choosing leaders like Air Force Lt. Gen. Dan “Razin” Caine. The department remains firm that identity-based promotion constitutes ineffective leadership.
In a recent speech, Hegseth argued, “Real toxic leadership is promoting people based on immutable characteristics or quotas.” The department’s current policy strongly supports performance-based advancements.
