Freedom Haulers Initiative
President Donald Trump will introduce the White House’s new Freedom Haulers initiative. This program seeks to create opportunities for military veterans to become commercial truck drivers, while also enhancing efforts to prevent illegal immigrants and non-English-speaking truckers from operating in the U.S.
According to White House spokesperson Anna Kelly, the initiative aims to make roads safer by removing illegal non-English-speaking truck drivers from highways. It enhances opportunities for veterans to obtain commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) by easing the process after they have completed their military service.
Veterans in Trucking
The Trump administration is actively working to recruit military veterans into the trucking industry. This effort will be announced at a special event featuring Donald Trump, Department of Transportation (DOT) Secretary Sean Duffy, Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins, and acting Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling.
The Department of Transportation will extend the waiver period for veterans to receive expedited CDL from 12 months to 24 months post service. Training programs will be available for veterans who lack heavy vehicle driving experience from their military service.
States like Indiana and Wyoming will join the Even Exchange program, simplifying the transition for military truck drivers to obtain civilian CDLs. Werner Enterprises, a notable trucking company, will announce plans to hire 1,400 new veteran drivers at this event.
Strengthened Regulations
The administration is maintaining its focus on stricter regulations for commercial drivers, emphasizing the importance of English-language proficiency. The DOT has revoked over 24,000 commercial driver’s licenses under these enhanced standards. Additionally, more than 28,000 licenses were canceled due to improper issuance to noncitizens.
This initiative aims to improve road safety by validating licenses and enhancing the workforce within the trucking industry.

Recent crashes involving illegal immigrant truck drivers in states such as Florida, California, Indiana, and Pennsylvania have highlighted the necessity of this initiative. Reports indicate that truck drivers experienced a wage increase of 7.42% during the Trump administration. This contrasts with a 3% decline under President Biden, highlighting the positive impact on the industry. Veteran truck drivers reportedly have 42% fewer accidents and travel significantly more miles than their non-veteran counterparts. These findings support the initiative’s potential to improve highway safety and bolster America’s supply chains.
