Disconnect Between Patriotic Pride and Civic Knowledge Revealed in National Poll

As Independence Day approaches in Philadelphia, the Liberty Bell serves as a reminder of America’s freedom. Yet, this emblem reveals a paradox highlighted by a new national poll regarding the balance between national pride and civic awareness.

A survey conducted by the Cato Institute with more than 2,000 adult participants in the U.S. shows a complex picture. While 86% express gratitude for their American identity and 70% acknowledge the ongoing relevance of the nation’s founding principles, civic knowledge appears lacking. Notably, 46% of respondents are unaware that America’s 250th anniversary marks the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.

The poll reports further gaps in understanding governmental basics. Nearly 60% are unaware of the U.S. Constitution’s primary role in limiting governmental power. Additionally, many cannot explain the colonies’ reasons for declaring independence from Great Britain.

Concerns about the future of American liberty are prominent among survey respondents. A significant portion believes the nation has diverged from its foundational principles. More than half anticipate that corruption and power misuse could threaten U.S. freedom over the next five decades. These apprehensions are shared across political lines, with both Republicans and Democrats expressing similar fears.

Among Gen Z respondents, the poll indicates minimal civic knowledge and unfavorable perceptions of the nation’s founders. Most Gen Z participants are unable to associate the 250th anniversary with the Declaration of Independence.

“The lack of civic knowledge is a great disaster,” remarked Jack Rakove, Coe Professor of History and American Studies and Professor of Political Science Emeritus at Stanford University. “Any democratic system of government to succeed requires having an informed electorate.”

Rakove attributes the issue to a fragmented media landscape and educational systems that emphasize STEM subjects over civics and history. He points out the difficulties in implementing comprehensive educational reforms due to decentralization.

Rakove also highlights the challenge of a disaggregated information environment, where individuals select their preferred sources. This choice does not foster informed democratic debate, which relies on exposure to diverse perspectives.
