New York Knicks center Mitchell Robinson’s comments about President Donald Trump’s presence at an NBA Finals game recently caught widespread attention. This has raised questions about Robinson’s political stance, particularly whether he supports the president. Trump’s presence at sports events has been controversial, with some teams and players opting not to visit the White House after victories.
During Game 3 of the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs, additional security measures were a point of contention among fans. Notably, a 2020 Twitter post by Knicks player Josh Hart resurfaced, which expressed satisfaction over Trump’s electoral loss to Joe Biden.
Before the game, a TikTok user named Eren posted a video suggesting Robinson would perform better with Trump watching. The video featured a young Allen Iverson playing against Michael Jordan, and Robinson commented, “You ain’t lying, brother.” Previously, Robinson shared a photo of himself with an American flag on social media. When someone remarked that it should not be a Trump flag, Robinson replied, “I got one.” Newsweek attempted to contact Robinson’s agent but did not receive a response in time.
Voter registration records reveal Robinson is registered as a Republican in Louisiana, though he initially registered without a party affiliation in 2020. His actual support for Trump remains ambiguous. In another TikTok interaction, Robinson claimed he was merely trolling. In an interview with ESPN, he expressed indifference to Trump’s attendance, stating, “cool, I guess,” and emphasized the team’s focus on the game.
Robinson’s teammate, Karl-Anthony Towns, has been vocal about his disapproval of Trump. Towns criticized Trump’s remarks about LeBron James and questioned his priorities regarding national issues. When asked on TikTok about his rapport with Towns, Robinson responded with a shrug emoji, indicating neutrality.
While Towns chose not to comment on Trump’s influence on the game, he emphasized the team’s dedication to maintaining hope for New York City fans. Knicks forward OG Anunoby downplayed Trump’s impact, commenting that Trump would simply be watching the game.
Trump faced mixed reactions from fans at the game. There were boos as his motorcade arrived and while displayed on the jumbotron during the national anthem. Yet, chants of “USA!” were also heard, which may not have specifically indicated support for Trump.
The heightened security around Madison Square Garden due to Trump’s attendance caused inconveniences. Attendees were instructed to arrive early, and watch parties outside the Garden were canceled due to security risks. Non-ticket holders were barred from areas surrounding the arena.
Knicks guard Jose Alvarado discussed these changes, noting that the watch party was relocated to Bryant Park. Alvarado, a New York native, remarked, “We’re New Yorkers. We’re going to find a way to watch a game, and that’s what we’re doing.”
